Basics

Five topics covering what sits behind a business online: hosting, websites, advertising, visibility and brand. Every topic starts at part 1 and builds step by step.

Hosting & servers

Where your website lives, who runs it, and what happens behind the scenes.

3 posts

  1. ExampleServer cabinets with network cables and green status lights in a data center

    Part 1 of 3

Where your website actually lives when it is online

Your website is a set of files on a server in a data center, your domain is the address that sends visitors there, and email runs as a separate service alongside it.

  2. The ONYX Graz club website in a browser window and on a phone, beside it the projects ONYX Graz, MD Kanttechnik and NXTRIG

    Part 2 of 3

What ongoing maintenance for your website includes

Ongoing maintenance means someone backs up, updates and monitors your website and handles small changes, so that it stays reachable and secure.

  3. ExampleThe website of the cocktail bar NACHTGLAS at nachtglas.bar in a browser, with a status panel reading “All running.”, website reachable, SSL certificate valid, server in the EU

    Part 3 of 3

Moving your domain and email without anything going down

Moving domain and email works without an outage if you first record every DNS entry, prepare mailboxes at the new provider, only then switch over, and cancel the old contract only once everything demonstrably works.

Websites & shops

What a good website has to do, and how one gets built.

6 posts

  1. The Tipsy Tuesday home page with its logo, one sentence about the club night and a Get Tickets button

    Part 1 of 6

What a website has to do for a small business

A website for a small business has to explain within a few seconds what you offer, work on a phone and make an enquiry possible without detours.

  2. The Tipsy Tuesday website in a browser window, in front of it the ticket selection on a phone with a Checkout Now button

    Part 2 of 6

When an online shop pays off for your business

An online shop pays off when you sell products or clearly defined services at clear prices, shipping or pickup is sorted, and someone handles orders, returns and upkeep for the long term.

  3. The ONYX Graz website in a browser window and on a phone, with the headline “Graz after midnight.” and the buttons Tickets and Book a table

    Part 3 of 6

What does a website cost in Austria?

What a website costs depends mainly on scope, design, content and features such as a shop or booking. At bown a website starts from €499 excl. VAT, and running it with hosting and maintenance from €39 per month excl. VAT.

  4. ExampleA schematic loading sequence of two websites on a phone, the old one stays blank and builds up bit by bit, the reworked MD Kanttechnik site is complete after a short wait

    Part 4 of 6

Is your website too slow? Core Web Vitals explained.

Core Web Vitals are three Google metrics for loading (LCP), responding to input (INP) and content shifting around (CLS); good means at most 2.5 seconds, 200 milliseconds and a score of 0.1.

  5. ExampleThe checkout of the NACHTGLAS cocktail bar's online shop with a gift voucher, fields for name and e-mail and the button to pay

    Part 5 of 6

Austria's Accessibility Act: what applies to websites, online shops and bookings since June 2025.

Since 28 June 2025, Austria's Accessibility Act (BaFG) applies to websites and apps through which consumers conclude a contract, such as online shops, ticket sales and online bookings. Micro-enterprises with fewer than ten employees and at most €2 million in turnover or balance sheet total are exempt.

  6. ExampleTwo phones showing the online booking of the beauty studio HAUTZEIT, on the left a month calendar with free days in November, on the right the free and taken times on 12 November

    Part 6 of 6

Online appointment booking: a ready-made tool or your own solution?

For online appointment booking, a ready-made tool is enough for most small businesses, as long as it offers a data processing agreement and sends reminders. Your own solution pays off when booking depends on how you work, for example on tables, rooms, pre-orders or payments that no tool handles that way.

Marketing & advertising

Posting, advertising, budgeting: what fits a smaller business.

  1. ExampleInstagram profile of the cocktail bar NACHTGLAS with a grid of posts, beside it two stories

    Part 1 of 5

    Post regularly or run ads?

Posts build trust in your business over time, ads make a specific offer known quickly, and your goal decides which form you need.

  2. ExampleTwo sponsored TikTok ads for the club KANAL, one for the season opening and one for its opening hours

    Part 2 of 5

A marketing budget that fits your business

A usable marketing budget starts with a goal and then separates three items from each other, namely production, ongoing support and the money for the advertising platform.

  3. ExampleTwo sponsored Instagram ads for the cocktail bar NACHTGLAS, a post and a story, each with a button to book a table

    Part 3 of 5

Meta Ads or Google Ads, which fits your business?

Google Ads fits when people already search for your service, Meta Ads on Instagram and Facebook fits when you want to make an offer known that nobody is searching for yet, and many businesses start with the channel that matches their most common enquiry.

  4. ExampleTwo moments of the same TikTok ad for the cocktail bar NACHTGLAS, on the left the opening “Tonight runs late.” with a cocktail glass, on the right the end card with the logo and a “Book a table” button

    Part 4 of 5

Advertising on TikTok: costs, formats and rules in Austria

You run TikTok ads in TikTok Ads Manager with a minimum budget of more than 50 US dollars per day and campaign, usually as a video in the feed or as a Spark Ad from one of your own posts; in Austria, people under 18 must not be shown ads tailored to them.

  5. ExampleRetargeting in two steps, on the left a visit to the page of a facial treatment at HAUTZEIT, on the right the sponsored Facebook ad for the same treatment days later

    Part 5 of 5

Cookie banners in Austria: when tracking, the Meta Pixel and consent require one

A cookie banner is mandatory in Austria as soon as your website uses cookies or similar techniques that are not technically necessary, such as the Meta Pixel, Google Analytics or advertising cookies: under § 165(3) TKG 2021 these may only run after active consent, and “Reject” has to be as easy as “Accept”.

Visibility

How people find you on Google, on maps and in AI search.

  2. ExampleGoogle Business Profile of the cocktail bar NACHTGLAS on a map, with photos, its opening hours and the buttons Directions, Call and Website

    Part 2 of 3

Setting up and maintaining your Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile is free, is set up and verified once, and only stays useful if opening hours, services, photos and replies to reviews are kept up to date.

  3. ExampleThe Google Business Profile of the cocktail bar NACHTGLAS in Search, with a map, the star rating under its name and buttons for website, directions and calling

    Part 3 of 3

Google reviews: what is allowed and how to reply well.

With Google reviews, you may ask your customers for an honest review and reply to it publicly. Bought or self-written reviews, rewards such as discounts, and asking only satisfied customers are prohibited: the first by Austria's Unfair Competition Act (UWG), all of them by Google's policies.

Take photos yourself or book a shoot?

You can take everyday photos for social media yourself with a phone; for pictures that stay the same for a long time and introduce your business, such as on your website or in ads, a planned shoot usually pays off.

And your project?
