Responsive design is a way of building a website so that one page adjusts its layout to the screen it is shown on. The same page can be narrow and stacked on a phone and wide with several columns on a desktop monitor.
What matters is how it feels in the hand. Text stays readable without zooming, images shrink instead of pushing the page sideways, and links and buttons stay large enough to tap with a finger.
Most visits to the website of a small business come from phones, so the phone layout is the main layout and not an afterthought. In a content management system you write the text once and the layout adapts around it. A page that works on a phone is also part of the technical groundwork that SEO builds on.

Since 28 June 2025, Austria's Accessibility Act (BaFG) applies to websites and apps through which consumers conclude a contract, such as online shops, ticket sales and online bookings. Micro-enterprises with fewer than ten employees and at most €2 million in turnover or balance sheet total are exempt.

Core Web Vitals are three Google metrics for loading (LCP), responding to input (INP) and content shifting around (CLS); good means at most 2.5 seconds, 200 milliseconds and a score of 0.1.

A website for a small business has to explain within a few seconds what you offer, work on a phone and make an enquiry possible without detours.
