A backup is a complete copy of a website at a point in time. It contains the files and the database behind them, so that the site can be put back the way it was.
Two questions decide what a backup is worth. The first is how much work is lost when you fall back on it, which depends on the interval between the copies. The second is how long a restore takes, because that is how long your site stays broken.
A backup that has never been test-restored is a promise, not a safeguard. Ask whoever runs your hosting when a restore was last tried and how long it took. If you edit your site through a content management system, the database matters as much as the files, because your texts are stored in it.
Websites & shops
What a website costs depends mainly on scope, design, content and features such as a shop or booking. At bown a website starts from €499 excl. VAT, and running it with hosting and maintenance from €39 per month excl. VAT.
Hosting & servers
Ongoing maintenance means someone backs up, updates and monitors your website and handles small changes, so that it stays reachable and secure.
